Armed Suspect Shot by Garland SWAT After Motel Standoff; Second Body Found Inside Room

Garland, TX – A tense standoff at a Motel 6 on LBJ Freeway ended in gunfire Wednesday afternoon after an armed suspect confronted officers, prompting a SWAT response. Garland Police initially responded to the motel around 1:50 p.m. on June 4 following reports of a disturbance between a tenant and hotel staff.

When officers attempted to contact the individual, he allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Officers quickly sought cover and called in the department’s SWAT team due to the heightened danger and an Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer charge.

Nearby rooms were evacuated as SWAT negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect, who refused to respond. After several failed attempts, tear gas was deployed into the room. As a SWAT officer approached the window, the suspect once again brandished a weapon. The officer fired, striking the suspect.

Upon entering the room, officers found the suspect deceased. A second person was also found inside, already deceased. Investigators believe that individual had died prior to the incident.

No officers were injured. The Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the investigation. The names of the deceased will be released after confirmation by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office and notification of next of kin.
